Background

In this activity students learn to use the doubling and halving strategy to solve multiplication problems involving decimals and fractions.

Comments on the Exercises

Exercise 1
Asks students to solve multiplication problems using the doubling and halving strategy. Students double the 5 in the problem to 10.

Exercise 2
Asks students to solve multiplication problems using the doubling and halving strategy. In this exercise students multiply by 4 and divide by 4.

Exercise 3
Asks students to solve multiplication problems involving fractions by using the doubling and halving strategies.

Exercise 4
Asks students to explain the formula that generalises the doubling and halving strategy with fractions and solve multiplication problems.
