In this unit we use thermometers to investigate questions about temperature. We explore questions relating to cooling patterns, the effect of location on temperature, and the results of mixing of water with different temperatures

The focus of this unit of work is the world weather and in particular the temperatures in different countries during any given week. For this project-based unit the Internet site www.weather.com is invaluable.

This unit comprises 5 stations, which involve the students developing an awareness of the attributes of temperature The focus is on the development of language for describing temperature.

The stations may be taken as whole class activities or they may be set up as centres or stations for the students to use. We expect that most students will already be aware of the attribute of temperature. For them these may be useful maintenance activities.

In this unit, students use marshmallows in a range of interesting measurement tasks.  Concepts covered include mass, volume, temperature, time, and area, with the skill of estimation being developed.
