This is a level 5 number link activity from the Figure It Out series. It relates to Stage 8 of the Number Framework.

In this unit we use thermometers to investigate questions about temperature. We explore questions relating to cooling patterns, the effect of location on temperature, and the results of mixing of water with different temperatures

The focus of this unit of work is the world weather and in particular the temperatures in different countries during any given week. For this project-based unit the Internet site www.weather.com is invaluable.

In this unit students construct several simple clocks including water clocks and pendulums. They investigate time as measured by these clocks and make comparisons with standard units of time.

This unit involves students in looking at the lengths of time various activities take and calculating how long is spent on these activities in a week.

This week students explore hours and half-hours and experiment with two ways of telling these times: using digital and analogue approaches.

In these five activities the students develop an understanding of the duration of minutes and seconds. We also practice reading time by counting the minutes after the hour.

This unit comprises 6 stations which involve the students solving problems which involve applying and interpreting aspects of mass. In addition one of the stations introduces the concepts of net and gross mass. The stations may be taken as whole class activities of they may be set up as activities that groups of students use throughout the week.

This unit comprises 5 stations which develop our concept of the "feel" of a gram. The stations may be taken as whole class activities or they may be set up as activities that groups of students use throughout the week.

In this unit students work at a variety of stations involving practical measuring tasks. Estimation skills and the ability to measure accurately using kilograms and grams are developed.
