Getting in Shape

This is a level 3 geometry activity from the Figure it Out series.

In Shape to Race

This is a Level 2 Geometry activity from the Figure It Out Series.

What Goes Around

This unit is made up of five stations which investigate the relationships between the area and perimeters of squares and rectangles. The unit could be taken a series sessions with the whole class or the students could circulate around the stations over the five days.

All Shapes and Sizes

This unit brings together a number of valuable mathematical ideas using the practical context of international paper sizes. In this context, the number √2 appears naturally as do arithmetic and geometric means. The international paper formats provide a way for students to practice some basic algebra by finding the general terms of patterns and then using these general expressions to find other specific terms. More algebra is present in the continued fractions of the last session. Students are also encouraged to practice their measuring skills with the aim of furthering their knowledge about the paper formats that are the subject of this unit.

Quadrilaterals

In this unit we conduct a couple of investigations looking at the relationship between the angle between two diagonals of a quadrilateral, the sides of the quadrilateral, and the type of quadrilateral. The main emphasis is on rectangles.

Arty Shapes

In this unit students take inspiration from several cubist artists then participate in a variety of art based activities to develop their knowledge of 2-dimensional shapes. They use their own language to describe their works and the shapes they have used.
