Supporting Numeracy Lead Teachers

Selecting your Lead teacher in Numeracy

Wherever possible create a shared numeracy Lead Teacher position to ensure that there is collegial support for professional development and to maintain momentum. The role of the Lead Teacher is demanding and complex as outlined in the links below.

Practical ways to support numeracy Lead Teachers

  • Pre training.
  • Discuss, clearly define and record the role and responsibilities of the Lead Teacher.
  • Provide, plan and timetable realistic release time to make it possible for your Lead Teacher/s to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
  • Prioritize numeracy as your only focus for professional development, at least in your first year and if possible in your second.
  • Timetable regular discussion with your Lead Teachers to ensure that you are fully informed of all numeracy progress and issues within your school.
  • Encourage involvement in Leadership and Management training opportunities.

Supporting numeracy development in small schools (1 - 4 teachers)

Often the principal is also the Lead Teacher.

Problem:

Lack of access to funded release time for in-class observations, demonstration lessons, facilitator visits, workshops, staff discussion and sharing time.

Possible solutions:

  • Video in class sessions for after school analysis.
  • Ask a buddy school to video a successful classroom for discussion removing the need to travel if distance/isolation is an issue.
  • Use of LATs/Teacher Aides (Limited Ability to Teach) for limited periods of time.
  • Call back days during holidays or designating a teacher only day.
  • Use of parents to support release time or to provide duty free lunch hours.
  • Sharing classes to release a teacher.
  • Call back a small group of students for demonstration lessons in out of school time.

Problem:

Limited budget for purchase of resources.

Possible solutions:

  • Parent volunteers to make resources.
  • Senior students to assist with resources.
