Purpose of the Site:

This site is part of the manipula math site, which contains a variety of math’s related Java applets that can be used to demonstrate mathematical ideas and concepts.  Potential users include students working at level 4 of the mathematics curriculum and their teachers.

New Zealand Context:

The link to this site contains a Java applet, similar to logo, which allows users to input angels and lengths to create a variety of polygons. This could be used in a variety of ways within the classroom, including being used as a focus in a small group teaching situation or being set as a series of challenges for independent work. As well as working on the computer students could work in pairs, with one student giving the instructions and the other following the instructions given to draw shapes using compasses and rulers.

New and Different

This applet is open ended and could be used in a variety of ways within classroom programmes. It can be used in a simple way to create regular polygons, or more sophisticated shapes can be investigated.

The task is hands-on and enjoyable, making it appealing and motivating for students.
