Purpose of the Site
The Problem of the Week is an educational web site that originates at the University of Mississippi. Students e-mail answers in to one of the 5 on-line contests to be in to win Casio products. Potential users include students in years 1-13 and their teachers with two of the contests suitable for years 1-8.
New Zealand Context:
This web-site is an ideal source of independent work for students looking for a challenge. Students could solve the problem independently then compare their problem solving methods and answers.
The Past Problems section of the web-site is a good source of number and logic problems for teachers to use with their students.
New and Different
The problems are unique and based in meaningful contexts. The Elementary Brain Teasers contest provides problems suitable for students in years 1-6, while Middle School Madness includes a range of problems suitable for years 7 and 8.
All answers submitted will receive a reply, with notification of the correct answer. Prizes are donated by CASIO electronics and contest winners are chosen randomly from the pool of contestants that successfully solve that week's problem.
The site is clear and easy to navigate.
