Make Ten

Specific Learning Outcomes:

Recall the facts up to 10, and the teen facts.

Solve addition problems by using compatible numbers.

Solve addition problems by looking for compatible numbers.

Description of mathematics:

Number Framework Stages 4 to 6.

Required Resource Materials:
counters
Activity:

Using Materials

Problem: Tina catches 6 fish, Miriam catches 7 fish and Liam catches 4 fish. How many do they catch altogether? Discuss and record 6 + 7 + 4 on the board. The students model this with three piles of counters. Ask how these numbers can be added by combining the 6 and 4 piles. Encourage them to add the 6 and 4 first to give 10 which makes the answer 17 obvious. Record the answer.

Examples. Word stories and recording for a “make tens” strategy:

5 + 2 + 5, 9 + 5 +1, 8 + 3 + 7 + 2, 3 + 5 + 5 + 7, 4 + 6 + 4 + 9 + 6, 3 + 6 + 4 + 9 + 7….

Using Imaging

Examples. Word stories and recording for a “make tens” strategy:

6 + 2 + 4, 8 + 5 +2, 8 + 1+ 9 + 2, 1 + 5 + 5 + 9, 4 + 6 + 4 + 9 + 6 , 1 + 5 + 5 + 9 + 7….

Using Properties of Numbers

Examples. Write these numbers on paper and cross out pairs of ten to get the answers:

8 + 6 + 4 + 7 +2, 7 + 8 + 4 + 3 + 2, 5 + 2 + 3 + 7 + 8 + 5, 1 + 2 + 5 + 7 + 9 + 5 + 3….

Partitions

This unit is about partitioning whole numbers. It focuses on partitioning numbers to “make a ten” or a decade when adding whole numbers, for example 8 + 6 can be solved as (8 + 2) + 4. The unit uses measurement as a context.
