Activity

Shielding:

Problem: Leanne has 8 sweets and she buys 5 more sweets. How manydoes she have now?

Write 5 + 8 on the board. In pairs the students discuss who would show 8 fingers and who would show 5 fingers without showing the fingers. They discuss how they would put 5 and 5 together to give 10 and 3 fingers by showing fingers if needed. Have thegroup discuss their methods. Write 5 + 8 = 13 on the board.

Examples. Word stories and recording for: 20 – 5, 5 + 9, 15 – 10, 20 - 15 , 17 – 7, 12 + 5, 7 + ? = 12....

Imaging Only:

Problem: What does 5 + 7 equal?

Write 5 + 7 on the board. Each student solves the problem independently by imagining 5 and 7.

Examples. Work out and record: 11 – 5, 5 + 6, 11 - 10, 12 – 2, 15 – 5, 11 + 5, 6 -  ? = 5...
