Spreadsheet Skill
The table at the bottom of the page is to be completed as shown.
The Cost and the TOTAL COST must be calculated using formulas.
The font is 12 point Arial, with table headings bold and the title is bold 18 point Arial and centred across the table.
Cells C5-C8, D5-D8 and E5-E10 are to be formatted as currency.
The table has borders in the positions as shown.
Copy the table as best you can. The following instructions may be of help.
Calling up the Format Cells Menu
All formatting of cells may done from the set of folders in the Format, Cells menu.
This menu may be called up by
- clicking Format in the top menu bar.
- clicking on Cells in the pull down menu.
This gives you a menu with six folders. They have the titles Number,Alignment, Font, Border, Patterns, Protection.

Changing the Font
Select the region you wish to change, then, using the folder Font, change it as required.

Centring inside cells
Centre the words in B3:E3 by first highlighting the region and then using the Alignment folder.

Centring across cells
Centre the title in B2 by highlighting B1:D1 and then clicking on the align centre button in the formatting toolbar.
Formatting numbers as Currency
Highlight the region you wish to format then using the Number folder choose Currency then OK. This will display the prices in currency form.

What happens if you don’t format any of the cells as currency, but type the $ sign in each time?
Formatting borders
Highlight the cells you wish to format, then, from the Border folder choose the border type you wish to use.
Changing column widths
Select a cell in the column you wish to change.
Format, Column , Width.
When the column width menu appears type 12 OK and the heading should now fit.

Exercise
Use your spreadsheet to work out the total cost for the following.

3 New release CDs, 2 Rerelease CDs, 4 Cheapies and 3 Second hand CDs.

5 New release CDs, 8 Cheapies and 12 Second hand CDs.

If you bought at least one of each type but spent less than $150, what are all the different ways you could have spent your money?

If prices were lowered by 6% through a decrease in taxation, what effect would this have on your answer to question three?

- personalize the cell borders in your spreadsheet
- highlight a cell or a chosen group of cells in a worksheet.
