Pie Graphs

You will need to be able to:

Introduction

The following data shows the results of a school survey of favourite ice cream flavours. Open a new spreadsheet and copy the data into the cell range A1:B7.

Draw a pie graph of the data. The following instructions may help you to do this.

  • Select the cell range A2:B7
  • Select ChartWizard (either select Chart from Insert on the Menu bar, or click on the bar graph icon on the toolbar).

    Þ step 1 Chart Type: Pie. Next.
    Þ step 2 Series in: l Columns. Next
    Þ step 3 Add a legend
    title Favourite Ice Cream Flavours
    Finish.

  • resize and reshape using handles. Move by dragging.

  • Select A1.
  • Use the arrow keys to move from A1 to C1.

Spreadsheet Skills

From the Menu bar select View, then choose Toolbars. From the menu which appears click on Chart, then OK. The toolbar will appear.

Investigate each button in turn to see how it works.

  • The one with the picture of a pie graph will change the style of graph. Click on the arrow beside the button and choose any type of graph.
  1. How many different types of graphs can be drawn using this button?

  • Make your graph back into a pie graph.
  • Click on the Format Chart Area button (it looks like a hand pointing to a piece of paper).
  • Now you can change the colour of the background to your graph.
  • Change the box that says Chart Area to Legend by dragging the arrow down.
  • Change the colour of the Legend area.
  • You can also change the colour and patterns of parts of your graph by double clicking on them.
  • Experiment with changing font, font size, colours and sizes of different parts of your graph

The Chart toolbar may be moved by dragging on the shaded top part of the box and may be removed by clicking on the blank square at the top left corner.

You should now know how to:

  • Use Chartwizard to draw and label a pie graph.
  • Call up and use the chart toolbar to make changes to your graphs.
