Purpose of the site:
This link is part of the Learning Wave Communications site, a division of Human Relations Media. Human Relations Media is a publisher of educational products in the United States. This link explores the concepts of area, perimeter and volume as they relate to ancient structures e.g. pyramids and ruins.
New Zealand context:
The most useful part of this site is the Applications section. It contains real-world problems involving the geometry of triangles, trapezoids, rectangles, circles and cylinders. This material could easily be incorporated into small group or whole class teaching sessions. Alternatively it could be set as independent work for students to complete.
New and Different:
The site is very well presented and clearly illustrates how the geometrical concepts discussed relate to ancient structures.
The site also contains Basic Skills sheets, suitable for students to practice basic geometrical calculations e.g. the perimeter of a triangle. The Concepts section of the site outlines geometrical concepts of area, perimeter and volume and applies these to triangles, rectangles, circles and trapezoids, also using the context of ancient structures.
