Purpose of the Site:

This site is supported by the National Science Foundation (USA) and aims to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives for primary mathematics instruction.

New Zealand Context:

A huge variety of materials are provided, and each manipulative is presented with curriculum links (US based), hands-on activity ideas to accompany the virtual activity and teacher information on how to incorporate the material into the classroom program. 

New and Different

The on-line interactive materials on this site are designed to engage students in mathematics learning. Traditionally, physical objects have been used to help students visualise relationships and applications; this site creates virtual learning environments to address the same goals.
Teachers can easily find what they are looking for, as the Library lists all manipulatives under grade level (US) and mathematical content. Brief descriptions of activities are given before download starts, helping teachers locate the materials they require.
Material takes a while to download, but is worth the wait.
