Ordering numbers from 0-100

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.           
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz). 
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.

Purpose:

You can help your child to order numbers in the range 0 - 100.  

What you need:

What to do:

Give each player a game board. The player A calls a number from their board and then crosses it off with a pencil or covers it with a counter/button.
The player B calls a number from their board that is higher than the player A’s number.
The round continues until neither player has a higher number to call. Then round two begins with player B calling a number from their game board.
The winner is the first player to cross off or cover all the numbers on their game board.

What to expect your child to do:

  • To read all the numbers.
  • To call a number higher than the previously called number. 

Variation:

  • The game is more challenging if the adult player takes jumps in the numbers they are calling.
  • The game can be played where the players call a number lower than the number the other player called.
  • Design your own game boards with numbers over 100.

  • Māu tēnā papa tau, māku tēnei. (That game board is for you, this one is for me.)
  • Kōrerohia mai tētahi o ngā tau i tō papa tau, ka whakatakoto ai i tētahi porotiti ki runga. (Say one of the numbers on your number board, and put a counter on it.)
  • Kei ahau tētahi tau he nui ake i tēnā, ko te whitu tekau mā ono. Māku e uhi. (I’ve got a number bigger than that, 76. I’ll cover it.)
  • Kei a koe tētahi tau nui ake i tēnā? (Have you got a number bigger than that?)
  • Kāore aku tau nui ake i tēnā. (I don’t have a number bigger than that.)
  • Me tīmata anō. Māku e tīmata i tēnei wā. (Let’s start again. I’ll start this time.)
  • Ko te tangata tuatahi ki te uhi i ngā tau katoa i tana papa tau, ko ia te toa. (The first player to cover all of the numbers on their board is the winner.)
