Before and After 1-100

The Ministry is migrating nzmaths content to Tāhurangi.
Relevant and up-to-date teaching resources are being moved to Tāhūrangi (tahurangi.education.govt.nz).
When all identified resources have been successfully moved, this website will close. We expect this to be in June 2024.
e-ako maths, e-ako Pāngarau, and e-ako PLD 360 will continue to be available.

Purpose:

You can help your child to practice the numbers one before and after the numbers in the range 0-100.

What you need:

  • Hundreds board (PDF,104KB) . You can print these or make your own.
  • Counters or small squares of cardboard.

What to do:

Print the hundreds board. Cover some numbers with counters or small squares of card. Ask your child to identify the number under the counter, encourage them to look at the number before it to work it out. For example, if 67 is covered draw their attention to the uncovered 66 and ask what number comes after 66.

Cover two consecutive numbers and ask them to identify the higher number first by using the number after it. For example, if 25, 26 are covered, ask them what number comes before 27.

What to expect your child to do:

To correctly identify the covered number by using the numbers on either side.

Variation:

Ask your child to identify a number 10 before or 10 after a number by moving up and down the columns, for example 35 is 10 before 45 and is directly above 45 on the hundreds board rows,
