AO2: Understand addition and subtraction of fractions, decimals, and integers.

This unit uses one of the digital learning objects, Loans and Savings, to support students as they investigate addition and subtraction with integers. The context of a bank balance illustrates the different scenarios of adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers. The learning object shows the loan account and the saving account as graphical columns so the students can see the effect of adding or subtracting money on the two accounts. Students are also asked to calculate the nett balance of the loan and savings accounts. The unit is suitable for students working at stage 7 of the number framework. It includes a sequence of problems and questions that can be used by the teacher when working with a group of students on the learning object, and ideas for independent student work.

In this unit students are asked to investigate mathematical relationships when they select various numbers into be used in 3 circle configuration below and in 6 circle configurations. They will explore both whole number and fractional numbers as they consider how various configurations impact on the relationships between numbers. 

This unit begins with Freudenthal’s (1983) annihilation model for demonstrating the addition and subtraction of integers then goes on to introduce other representations. It is designed for students working at Stage 7 of the Number Framework who are able to choose appropriately from a broad range of mental strategies to estimate answers and solve addition and subtraction.

To give students practise in adding fractions that match the descriptions eg. 1/8 + 1/4 ‘add to less than 1’. This can be used as a class starter or as an independent game.
