AO1: Use simple additive strategies with whole numbers and fractions.

In this unit we conduct a number of investigations using a party theme. In the unit the students spend time counting, comparing, organising, analysing, displaying and interpreting data. While discussing the data we take the opportunity to use and reinforce early additive strategies for combining numbers.

The purpose of this unit is to introduce the part-whole strategy of bridging to ten.

This activity is for students to use when working independently of the teacher in class and as homework to practice number properties.

In this unit five-based bead strings and number lines are used to solve addition and subtraction problems.  The aim is to get students that use a ‘count on’ or ‘count back by ones’ strategy to solve problems by making up to 10 and on through the ‘ty’ numbers

The purpose of this activity is to develop useful strategies for mental calculation when estimating possible addition solutions.

In this unit students are encouraged to abandon counting methods for adding and subtracting in favour of more complex but more efficient mental strategies using known doubles facts to derive the answers to addition problems.

In this unit students are given the opportunity to explore various combinations of coins and dollars that add to make given totals.  Within the context of money problems students will practise using flexible mental strategies including rounding, estimating, and finding compatible numbers.

This unit uses one of the digital learning objects, the part-adder, to support students as they investigate the addition of whole numbers. It is the first in a series of two units that focus on using this learning object and outlines how it can be used with students working at stage 5 of the Number Framework. The second unit in the series looks at using the learning object with students at stage 6. The unit includes problems and questions that can be used by the teacher when working with a group of students on the learning object, and ideas for independent student work.

In this unit we explore fractions of regions as well as fractions of sets.    We look for and understand the connection between fractions and division.

This unit introduces students to "The Difference Bar" digital learning object, a tool to help students work out the difference between two numbers by breaking numbers into parts.

The generated problems at this level involve 2 two-digit numbers where the difference is less than ten and you can make problems to find the difference between any single digit number and any two-digit number.

In this unit students are given the opportunity to explore multiplication concepts using arrays.  The use of multiple strategies and the sharing of strategies is encouraged, in group and whole class situations.

In this unit we work on word problems about cars and people, fish and fish bowls, and tables and table legs.  We learn about different types of problems and modelling in a variety of ways. We link these to the commutative properties of multiplication (though we don’t expect the students to use these words for them).

This unit explores the beginnings of proportional thinking by introducing fractions. The purpose for this unit is to make, name, and recognize wholes, halves, third parts, fourth parts and fifth parts of a variety of objects. The use of two different physical representation, the whole and parts of a whole is used to develop the concept of fraction. Language plays an important part in this unit. Being able to count in fractions helps the children to see that you can have 5 thirds or six halves. Although the unit is planned around 5 sessions it can be extended over a longer period of time.
