The Part-adder 1

This unit uses one of the digital learning objects, the part-adder, to support students as they investigate the addition of whole numbers. It is the first in a series of two units that focus on using this learning object and outlines how it can be used with students working at Stage 5-Early Additive of the Number Framework. The second unit in the series looks at using the learning object with students at Stage 6-Advanced Additive. The unit includes problems and questions that can be used by the teacher when working with a group of students on the learning object, and ideas for independent student work.

The Difference Bar 1

This unit introduces students to "The Difference Bar" digital learning object, a tool to help students work out the difference between two numbers by breaking numbers into parts.

This unit is for students working at Stage 5-Early Additive of the Number Framework, Curriculum Level 2, i.e. students who have developed a part-whole strategy for addition and subtraction. Student at this level have just started to understand and use part whole thinking to solve problems.

This digital learning object has two versions, one where difference problems are generated and one where students and teachers can make up their own difference problems. The generated problems at this level involve 2 two-digit numbers where the difference is less than ten and you can make problems to find the difference between any single digit number and any two-digit number.

This unit provides problems that can be used by the teacher when working with groups of students and problems for students to work on independent of the teacher.

The Take-Away Bar 1

This unit introduces students to "The Take-Away Bar" digital learning object, a tool to help students solve subtraction problems by breaking numbers into parts.

This unit is for students working at Stage 5-Early Additive of the Number Framework, Curriculum Level 2. Student at this level have just started to understand and use part whole thinking to solve problems.

This digital learning object has two versions, one where subtraction problems are generated and one where students and teachers can make up their own subtraction problems. The problems at this level involve subtracting a single digit number from a two-digit number.

In this unit students are given the opportunity to explore multiplication concepts using arrays.  The use of multiple strategies and the sharing of strategies is encouraged, in group and whole class situations.

We link these to the commutative properties of multiplication (though we don’t expect the students to use these words for them).

Fraction Bits and Parts

This unit explores the beginnings of proportional thinking by introducing fractions. The purpose for this unit is to make, name, and recognise wholes, halves, third parts, fourth parts and fifth parts of a variety of objects. The use of two different physical representation, the whole and parts of a whole is used to develop the concept of fraction. Language plays an important part in this unit. Being able to count in fractions helps the children to see that you can have 5 thirds or six halves. Although the unit is planned around 5 sessions it can be extended over a longer period of time.

This unit supports teaching and learning activities in the Student Fractions e-ako 1 and 2 and complements the learning activities in Book 7 Teaching Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.
