Children
Resource

Paper Planes

In this unit, students investigate one variable to see if they can make a paper plane fly further. They use scatter plots to establish a possible relationship between variables then use what they have found to make a paper plane to enter into a class competition. Who will win the class challenge? Some key vocabulary will need introduction and discussion.

Resource

Shady Shadows

This is a level 3 measurement activity from the Figure it Out series.

Resource

Measuring Angles

This unit is about estimating and measuring angles. Initially, the students will be required to describe an amount of turn from a particular position to another using the ‘circular’ benchmarks of 0,1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and full turn. Estimation language such as ‘just about’, ‘between’, ‘not quite’, ‘just over’, and similar terms may be used to qualify their descriptions. As the unit progresses, the students will be exposed to the more formal unit of measurement, the ‘degree’. They will be involved in constructing a link between the fractions of the circle with which they are familiar and the corresponding degree values, where 360 degrees is used as the measure of a complete turn.

Only towards the end of the unit are students introduced to the protractor as a tool that can be used to measure an angle. Estimation will continue to play an important role, however.

Resource

How much room?

In this unit we explore the amount of room we have in our classrooms. We use this to decide if the "ideal" classroom size.

Resource

Rainbow Jelly

In this unit students work with teaspoons, tablespoons and fractions of a cup to make their own rainbow jelly, converting between units of volume as required.

Resource

Paint It!

In this unit we measure small quantities of paint accurately to produce our own colour range. We also think about colour and where it comes from.

know that the angle at a point is 360°

Resource

Make a Measurement Maths Trail

In this unit students first go round a maths trail devised by the teacher. They then work in groups to devise and complete a maths trail of their own.  They then go round this new maths trail or, if another class can work in parallel, each class goes round the other’s trail.

Resource

How far is a km?

In this unit we explore the size of a kilometre and the time it takes to cover this distance.

Resource

Stepping Out

In this unit students find out the length of their pace when walking and running, and compare these with the paces of others

Resource

Perplexing Perimeters

In the process of constructing their own “rulers” the students develop a sense of the size of a centimetre and metre.  As the students select the appropriate “ruler” for the tasks they learn to choose that the section of the measuring instrument we are using/making is determined by the exactness of the measurement needed.  In addition this unit reinforces the number skills of students as they calculate the perimeter of objects using centimetres or metres.

Resource

Giant Mystery

We have the hand print of a Giant…That’s all!! Can we find out how big this giant visitor was? By measuring other people, can we determine the relationship between hand size and body size, to help reconstruct the giant? The unit explores relationships between the hand length, width, span of a person and their height and other body measurements.

Resource

Scale Matters

The learning object, Scale Matters, develops concepts about scale. Reading scales is critical for students if they are to use measuring devices (e.g. rulers, thermometers), to represent calculations using single and double number lines, to interpret locations in co-ordinate systems and to interpret many different forms of data display. For each problem the object gives the position of two numbers on a number line. From that information students are required to solve two types of problem:

  1. Name the number requires the student to type in the number that matches a given position on the number line.
  2. Select the spot requires the student to point the cursor to the location of a specified number.
Resource

How Can You Measure This?

In this unit students, working in groups of 2 to 4, carry out and report on a series of investigations involving decisions about how to measure something. The four investigations suggested are:

What’s In a Newspaper?
Students calculate what fraction of a newspaper is devoted to news, sport, advertisements and other categories of information.

Are You a Square?
Students determine whether their height is equal to, greater or less than, the distance from end to end of their outstretched arms.

How Far Do You Walk?
Students work out approximately how far they walk in one year.

How Thick Is It?
Students decide how to measure a length that cannot be measured directly – for example the thickness of a wall of their classroom.

In each investigation the students follow the same sequence:

  1. Make sure they understand the problem
  2. Discuss and decide on three different strategies for tackling the problem
  3. Complete a table to assess the merits of each strategy
  4. Use the best strategy for conducting the investigation
  5. Record their methods and results

Resource

Making Benchmarks - Volume

In this unit we will explore the idea of having Benchmarks of 1 litre and ½ litre or 500 millilitres, to aid in estimating the volume of given objects.

Resource

Boxing On

Resource

Oranges L3

In this unit we focus on selecting appropriate units for measurement and carrying out practical measuring tasks.  The context will be measuring various attributes of an orange.

Resource

Houses

This unit seeks to connect learning outcomes across all five content strands, number, geometry, statistics, algebra, and measurement.  The context of houses is used to develop concepts such as drawing and modelling 3-dimensional objects, using co-ordinate systems to locate position, finding all the possibilities of events, and identifying paths through simple networks.  The unit provides an excellent vehicle for students to use a broad range of problem solving strategies.

Resource

The School Fair

This unit is designed to provide students with a context in which to use number operations, as well as other strands of the mathematics curriculum.  The context of a school fair could either be a hypothetical context, or could be linked to an actual school fair, with students helping to plan and run activities.

Resource

Marshmallows

In this unit, students use marshmallows in a range of interesting measurement tasks.  Concepts covered include mass, volume, temperature, time, and area, with the skill of estimation being developed.

Resource

Supermarket Shopping

In this unit we introduce the kilogram as a standard unit of measurement using the context of Supermarket shopping. We develop our understanding of the "feel" of a kilogram by making our own kilogram weights.

Resource

Weather dot com

The focus of this unit of work is the world weather and in particular the temperatures in different countries during any given week. For this project-based unit the Internet site www.weather.com is invaluable.
