Level Four > Geometry and Measurement

AO1: Use appropriate scales, devices, and metric units for length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), temperature, angle, and time.

Children
Resource

Average Looking

In this unit we use measurements of our classmates to find the average (means and modes) of our features. We use our findings to create a 3-dimensional "class head" .

Resource

Building with triangles

In this unit, students will construct three-dimensional objects with triangles with emphasis on

  • identifying properties of triangles
  • constructing triangles (both equilateral and irregular), using either ruler and protractor or ruler and compass
  • identifying three-dimensional objects which can be constructed using triangles
  • designing the net and making three-dimensional objects
  • naming three-dimensional objects
Resource

Solubility

Students will investigate the solubility of sugar in water.  They will design and carry out experiments which involve making accurate measurements of volume, mass, and temperature.

Resource

Moana's Watch

Convert seconds to minutes.

Subtract minutes and seconds using a 24-hour clock

Devise and use problem solving strategies to explore situations mathematically (be systematic).

Resource

Garry The Greengrocer

Use balance scales to weigh objects (or describe how balance scales weigh objects)

Work systematically to solve a problem

Devise and use problem solving strategies to explore situations mathematically (guess and check, be systematic, make a drawing).

Resource

Make a Measurement Maths Trail

In this unit students first go round a maths trail devised by the teacher. They then work in groups to devise and complete a maths trail of their own.  They then go round this new maths trail or, if another class can work in parallel, each class goes round the other’s trail.

Resource

How fast is fast?

This unit is designed to provide students with a measurement context in which to use number operations. In calculating speed from distance and time, they will apply number strategies as they convert between units.

Resource

Breakfast Biscuits

This unit seeks to connect learning outcomes across all five content strands, number, geometry, statistics, and measurement. However the context lends itself strongly to use of measurement and statistics. In the unit students investigate questions that involve them in experiment design, data collection and display, and drawing conclusions from data. Students investigate the measurements of breakfast biscuits, how much milk they absorb, how strong they are and the hidden truth about collecting cards.

Resource

Spaced Out

In this unit we explore the volume (in cubic units) of our skyscraper constructions and those of others in the class. We investigate the most efficient way to pack cuboids in a confined space and conclude with "water play" as we investigate the relationship between millilitres and cubic centimetres

Resource

Oranges L4

In this unit we focus on selecting appropriate units for measurement in practical situations.  We ask the students to justify the instrument they have used for the degree of accuracy required in their measurements.

Resource

Weighty Problems

This unit comprises 6 stations which involve the students solving problems which involve applying and interpreting aspects of mass. In addition one of the stations introduces the concepts of net and gross mass. The stations may be taken as whole class activities of they may be set up as activities that groups of students use throughout the week.

Resource

How fast is fast?

This unit is designed to provide students with a measurement context in which to use number operations

Resource

Time Zones

In this unit we introduce and explore time zones and international Date Line.

Resource

Cool Times with Heat

In this unit we use thermometers to investigate questions about temperature. We explore questions relating to cooling patterns, the effect of location on temperature, and the results of mixing of water with different temperatures

Resource

Scaling Our School

In this unit we look at estimating the length and height of buildings at your school. We then compare these estimates with the actual heights or lengths. Students will then build scale models selecting appropriate scales using ratio to translate the "real" dimensions into the dimensions for the scale model.

Doing Time

In this activity students will explore activities relating to time.
