AO1: Generalise that whole numbers can be partitioned in many ways.

This unit explores the beginnings of proportional thinking by introducing fractions. The purpose for this unit is to make, name, and recognize wholes, halves, third parts, fourth parts and fifth parts of a variety of objects. The use of two different physical representation, the whole and parts of a whole is used to develop the concept of fraction. Language plays an important part in this unit. Being able to count in fractions helps the children to see that you can have 5 thirds or six halves. Although the unit is planned around 5 sessions it can be extended over a longer period of time.
