AO1: Conduct investigations using the statistical enquiry cycle: gathering, sorting, and displaying multivariate category and whole-number data and simple time-series data to answer questions; identifying patterns and trends in context, within and between data sets; communicating findings, using data displays.

This unit provides a way of looking at information from a group of individuals. Data squares hold several pieces of information about individuals. Sorting and organising a set of data squares allows things to be found out about the group and questions about the group answered. The data squares allow students to consider issues needing more than one category to be considered at the same time. Proportional thinking will be encouraged and averages will be calculated.

We have the hand print of a Giant…That’s all!! Can we find out how big this giant visitor was? By measuring other people, can we determine the relationship between hand size and body size, to help reconstruct the giant? The unit explores relationships between the hand length, width, span of a person and their height and other body measurements.

In this unit students are faced with the challenge of ordering the right amounts of food to put down in a hangi for the whole school.  They will need to carry out a statistical investigation, to survey the school population about preferred choices of food, to decide how they are best to collect the data and then to record their results so that the hangi can go ahead.

This week we collect data about sporting activities and present the data using stem-and-leaf graphs and bar charts.

This week we collect data using our fridge as the context. We present the data as dot plots, strip graphs and pie charts.

In this unit we begin by investigating the amount of water contained in a carrot. We plot the "weight" of the carrot using a line-graph as the water in the carrot evaporates. The students also pose their own carrot questions for investigation.

In this unit students will identify how to plan and carry out a statistical investigation, looking at using comparisons, controls and measurable data.
