X Marks the Spot

This unit uses games and puzzles to explore co-ordinate systems and their uses. The students are given the opportunity to invent their own systems by locating counters on a sheet of paper and by finding the dead centre of a set of objects. The Cartesian and polar co-ordinate systems are used to locate position on maps. The polar co-ordinates are also useful to describe certain loci.

Resource

Map it

This unit uses explores the mathematics of maps, including scale, grid references and bearings.

Resource

Red October

In the film The Hunt For Red October, at one point the escaping Russian submarine has to navigate a complicated underwater trench. This unit is built around that idea and brings in the measurement of angle and distance. It is expected at this stage that the students will know how to use protractors.

Resource

Robots

Follow grid references

Devise and use problem solving strategies to explore situations mathematically (guess and check, make a drawing, use equipment)

Resource

Number in Geometry

These exercises, activities and games are designed for students to use independently or in small groups to practise number properties. Some involve investigation (see Related Resources) and may become longer and more involved tasks with subsequent recording/reporting. Typically an exercise is a 10 to 15 minute activity.

Direction and Position

This unit of work is based on the Māori medium unit Te Ahunga me te Taunga, and investigates the main compass directions, degree measures of direction and the use of a grid system to define locations on a map.
